This cute Ring-necked Pheasant is soft and fuzzy -- and it sings! These attractive game birds, introduced to the United States from their native range in Asia, have beautifully patterned brown feathers, long tails and shiny green heads. It is the state bird of South Dakota, and occurs over much of the northern half of the United States. Most of their time is spent at ground level, eating plants, seeds and some insects. Nests are generally made on the ground. Fast running and quick take-offs occur when the birds are approached. The lifelike design and detailing is the result of input from the National Audubon Society. The authentic bird song is from the world famous Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
