One of the rarest, most beautiful, and mysterious birds in the world, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, has reappeared in the deep swamp forests of Arkansas. Feared extinct for decades, the species may persist elsewhere within its former range, as significant remnants of the great southern forests are being nurtured back to their former glory. This magnificent bird of the ancient forests speaks to us about our past, and about hopes for our future. By securing large expanses of forest across the southern U.S. and allowing these places to grow old in their natural condition, we hope that one day Ivory-billed Woodpeckers will again grace the treetops of our great southern forests.
